Hurricane Preparedness Expo
On June 1, 2024, Teri Helenese, in her role as the Director of State-Federal relations and Washington representative for the government of the U.S. Virgin Islands, organized an impactful Hurricane Preparedness Expo in collaboration with the V.I. Territorial Emergency Management Agency (VITEMA). The event kicked off the official start of the hurricane season on St. Croix, where over 150 participants gathered to receive educational materials, safety information, and preparedness kits. VITEMA’s director, Daryl DeFrance Jaschen, delivered a compelling presentation, and nearly 200 hurricane preparedness kits containing essential items such as solar-powered chargers, fireproof document bags, first aid supplies, and can openers were distributed. The expo was praised by attendees as a “great start to the season” and highlighted Teri’s dedication to ensuring USVI communities are well-prepared.
The event continued on St. Thomas with a “Treasures of the Tropics Lunch Reception,” culminating at St. John with a “Taste of the Caribbean Callaloo and Soup Extravaganza.” Teri’s commitment to providing vital information and resources was evident throughout, as she facilitated a platform for residents to engage directly with experts from VITEMA, The Red Cross, and other organizations. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants expressing gratitude for the practical insights and the opportunity to strengthen their resilience. These expos, a testament to the power of community, underscored the importance of community preparedness and demonstrated Teri’s unwavering dedication to safeguarding the lives and well-being of USVI residents during the hurricane season.
